2019 Anthology Guidelines

Sponsored by Outrider Press in Affiliation with TallGrass Writers Guild--$1,000 in Cash Prizes

DEADLINE: 4-30-19
Email  tallgrassguildATsbcglobalDOTnet  Prizes: $500 Cash Prize each-Poetry and Prose divisions; previously published material + simultaneous submissions OK (notify us).

Planned publication date: fall, 2019. Working Title:  LOON MAGIC and Other Night Sounds. Planned publication date: fall, 2019. Please remember it’s all about twilight and night sounds w/emphasis on sound. We interpret themes broadly, and include: Nature's sounds at twilight and night including frogs, crickets, cicadas, all manner of birds including owls, ducks and other water and wading birds; other nocturnal animals waking and finding food; and paranormal life at sundown, including vampires.

Also: people leaving work; crowded supermarkets; indoor/outdoor and 24/7 restaurants; concerts, formal and otherwise; sounds of evening meal-making; children at bedtime; parties; whispered conversations in the dark.

In addition, we welcome writing with
specifically urban settings:  people who operate 24/7 tech/mechanical support and retail services like gas stations and donut shops; sports fans at an outdoor stadium or indoor bar. Sensuality OK, but no erotica/soft porn, please. We recommend becoming familiar with past years' anthologies (see 'Publications' tab) for a better sense of the work we publish.

All submissions are read and evaluated by in-house editorial staff. Submission does not guarantee acceptance; manuscripts making the final cut are forwarded to independent judges for possible award of $500 First Prizes each for poetry and prose. Also: 2nd and 3rd places. All winners will have Featured Reader status at LOON MAGIC's free Kickoff Reading (depending on Printers Row Lit Fest scheduling) at Chicago Tribune's Printers Row Lit Fest, the nation's third largest book fair of its kind, seeing 120,000+ attendance in 2018. All winners and other selected contributors receive Featured Reader status at our Publishing Party, free and open to all, and traditionally held at Chicago's venerable Sulzer Regional Library. Each published contributor receives a free copy of the anthology.

We nominate for a variety of literary prizes including the Pushcart Prize. Our 2018 Pushcart nominees are Tracey Ludvik and Jill Marcusse published in THE STARS (2018).

Judge: Diane Williams, author of Performing Seals

Non-refundable entry fees ($US) for each category are $19 reduced to $15 each for TWG members. TallGrass is rare among arts organizations since it is independent and self-supporting. Current annual U.S. TWG membership fee is $50 (students: $30) and includes four 10-page newsletters each year. Newsletters contain current events in the creative arts community; member news; book reviews; and pages of Manuscripts Wanted that list publications seeking writers’ submissions.
